It Happens by Karan Sharma – Book Review

It Happens

During our childhood days, we tend to have these crushes on people older than us that fade as we grow up. We never act upon them but they remain as memories that we always cherish.

But what happens when two adults with such an age difference fall in love?

It Happens is a story about how Gautam, a twenty-five-year-old upcoming professional and Roshni, an unmarried thirty-seven-year-old senior management member working in the same multinational bank, face this very question. Can two people with such a vast age difference be compatible?

The story is a romantic comedy that explores this situation in a light-hearted way as they fall in love, get laughed at by their friends and then develop cold feet, thinking about the repercussions their age difference could have on their marriage. Since this happens in India, where marriage is a major social issue, the plot holds further intrigue.

They say love is blind and makes one think with the heart, rather than the mind. Will two smart professionals make a mistake by doing so? Or will they listen to their logical senses at the last moment to avert what may be the biggest blunder of their lives?

Book Review:

“It Happens” seemed to be a very promising book and I immediately got interested in reading it after reading its blurb. The theme seemed interesting and fresh. However, after first few pages, the book totally lost its stream.

Before moving on to the other aspects, I would like to congratulate the author for choosing such a subject. It’s a complicated subject and the author should be applauded for picking it. The plot is definitely interesting. It is the execution that lacked the punch and maturity. The plot idea is definitely realistic and brings out some real aspects that people actually face but are afraid to come out in the open with.

There are two aspects of my review. If you pick up the book without any expectation then you will definitely enjoy it as a simple and cute rom com. However, if you are looking forward to reading some mature love story, you may be disappointed.

The style of narration is too simple and at times repetitive. The language is very plain and slow. After a point of time it felt like dragging.

The characters have also not been developed well. There was a lot of scope to add some more shades to the characters. The author could have devoted some more pages to develop the characters. Moreover, there was a scope of adding a lot of subplots. The situations seem quite unrealistic and filmy.

The title of the book is okay. However, the author could have avoided using titles for every chapter. The cover is too simple and could have been better.

Overall, I would like to say that It Happens by Karan Sharma is a simple love story or should I say a romantic comedy which had a lot of potential but failed due to the way the story was executed. Appreciate the author for choosing the topic and expect a lot more from him in future. For me this one was an average read. Three stars for attempting a difficult and bold topic.
