Mrs Funnybones – Book Review

Mrs Funnybones

Good morning, it’s 6 a.m. and I am wide awake because the man of the house has decided that he needs to perform a series of complex manoeuvres that involve him balancing on his left elbow. When I fell asleep last night, there was a baby lying next to me. Her smelly diaper is still wedged on my head but aside from this rather damp clue, I can’t seem to find her anywhere. I could ask my mother-in-law if she has seen the baby, but she may just tell me that I need to fast on alternate Mondays, and God will deliver the baby back to me………

Book Review:

Mrs Funnybones, the title itself is enough to raise anyone’s curiosity.  The fact that it has been written by Twinkle Khanna works as a catalyst for those who love to have a peek into a star’s life. I am not a follower of her blog but the book description made me consider reading it. There was this surmounting curiosity about how a former star, now a star wife, puts the moments of her life in a witty and funny manner that I was reading about everywhere. Maybe it was the everyday struggles of once a movie star but now an affluent but average woman, mother and wife that drew me towards the book.

Mrs Funnybones is a quick read and moderately entertaining. Everywhere I have been reading about the great job done by the actor turned author but I can’t help having a few contradictory thoughts on how I feel about the book and her writing.

While every review I read is appreciating the way she has presented everything in a funny lighthearted manner that is easy to relate with the common people (one of the reviews read: “What she does wonderfully right is to bridge the gap between her celebrity status and an ‘aam aurat’), there were several instances that made me feel that she was being quite snobbish towards common folk.

The book reads like a personal journal of a celebrity (who is also a mother, a wife, a daughter and daughter-in-law) which can be best described as a compilation of thoughts and memories.

There is no denying the fact that Twinkle Khanna is a well read, witty and intelligent person which is clearly shown by the book. But it is no literary masterpiece. If you are looking for a lot of depth in the book, then this is not the right choice. It is just simple humor and is the perfect choice if you want a break from the serious heavy routine to just laugh on random stuff or during a two hour flight when you are not really looking for any serious reading.

Although Twinkle Khanna has been sassy, sarcastic, and sometimes funny, however, I found it hard to connect with the book maybe because my world is so different from hers, as would be of most people who read it.

The book primarily caters to those who take keen interest in the life and times of the celebrities. If you are looking for any intellectual point of views in it, then you will be disappointed. If you are not a fan of the lifestyles of Bollywood celebrities, then there is absolutely nothing in the offering. I I doubt that the book would have received such good reviews if if it had not been written by a celebrity.
